Decision Made & New Poll

- MooMan65

October 31, 2003

Well, the end of the month has arrived and it is time for me to make a decision on what to do. The poll went neck-and-neck the entire time, and even now as I close it the two main choices are basically evenly matched. In light of this I've had to in the end make the hard choice to go with realism. However it will not be done in the full extent to what I was talking about previously. In fact you'll see the changes will mainly be done to Yuri and little parts of the other two sides. Since Yuri's Revenge came out there have been major conflicting reports on how over/under balanced he is, and really I think his concepts of war need to be altered in order to help satisfy the public.

As for certain changes to the other sides, you will notice now I have actually put multiple polls on the right-hand menu. While I have decided on replacements for many of the units I want to adjust, I do want public opinion in the areas anyway just to see how well they could be received. I decided to do multiple polls as I did not want to stretch this issue much further time-wise, so instead of presenting them one at a time over a time period of months, I'll be doing it three polls at a time. The first three of these poll questions are as follows:

"What should the Mirage Tank be replaced with?"
"What should the Prism Tower be replaced with?"
"What should the Prism Tank be replaced with?"

While the options are pretty self-explanitory, let me explain a few that may need some extra descriptions:
-Phase Tank: This is based off the Aftermath unit from RA. I'd much rather use this one as it has a history at least from the past game. The Phase Tank works in the way that when not moving around, its totally invisible to the enemy unlike the Mirage Tank which marely disguises itself. When moving and firing it reveals itself.
-Stealth Tank: Another possible option, the same as what is seen in the Tiberian games. This could be used as a representation of the Red Alert games reaching the level of technology seen in Tiberian Dawn which was set around 15 years ahead of RA2.
-Gun Turret: We all know this. Basically like the RA1 Turret; cheap, effective and deadly.
-Rail Tower: For those of you wanting to replace the Prism Tower with something equally high-tech, a Railgun Tower is an option. Instead of firing light beams, it fires slugs at supersonic speeds just like in Tiberian Sun. Railgun technology at the time of RA2 is a more feasible alternative to Prism technology for those who still like the 'laser gun' look.
-Rail Tank: Just like the Rail Tower but on land. You can see I'm looking to replace Prism technology with Railgun technology. I want the Rail Tank to be the Allies' experimental tank, unlike Prism technology which was seen in multiple game objects.
And of course everyone may have their own ideas, which I welcome if you could post a comment detailing them.

And just for the record, here the last poll results:

"How should YR˛ continue being made?" [128 votes total]

-Change the goals to suit a more realistic sense. (48)
-Just carry on as you're going now. (47)
-I don't mind either way. (34)

Some Fan Comments:

-Levi@th@n-Spir@l_Dre@m: As said, you've got your ideas for how you want YR2 to be. And you've also said that your last mod diverted from how you wanted it. Therefore the best thing you can do is to not divert this mod too much from what you have planned. I've seen your ideas list. It's excellent and will make a damn good mod as it is. Realism usually makes bad things happen. True War did it, and it didn't wholly work out for them. Generals isn't realistic at all but it still boasted the moniker of realistic and fudged it up. So I say just keep it as it's going. Don't take no crap from anyone saying that it's not realistic enough or whatever, 'cause that's not what C&C is about :P That's not saying to go berserk and add loads of weird stuff that simply kills off the game (and I know you won't do that ^_- ) but you have plenty of freedom: Use it!
-Clazzy: You should stick to as much realism that's possible. It worked well for the frst two C&C games, everything in Tiberian Dawn is possible in real life (with the exception of the ion cannon satellite's weapon) and as you said the Chronosphere, Iron Curtain and Tesla Coil in RA1. They were still great fun and were probably more popular than RA2/YR. If you go with realism then you can use certain pieces of code like the Psychic Dominator in different ways instead of it being soley used for Yuri's mind control techniques. This also includes the IFV, (I had this idea) you can replace it with a normal tank but has a mountable weapon which the passenger can fire with.
-assassyn: now that i think about it prism tanks do suck. they dont have to deploy to fire, their reload time is minimal and the beams cant get shot by defenses like a v3 can i hate that!! maybe u should create some long range artillery piece that has to deploy to shoot like a siege weapon of some sort, like the artillery mech in tiberian sun or somethin , except make it a legitimate weapon like an m109 paladin or an m198 howitzer that can be towed by a troop truck or by a tank. that'd make for some interesting battles i think.
-frost bite: mooman, u said that that the new technology isn't based on real things. Let me just say this: it is! In case you didn't know, the Soviets did spend lots of money in researching children with psychic powers. Prism technology is based on carbon dioxide lasers that really can cut. Genetic Mutation is based on all those genetically modified crops out there. I mean, the ppl at westwood didn't just invent all this stuff...they based it on real things!!!

In the end realism won by 1 vote, but that's certainly not a big enough margin to go by. While I did chose to go ahead with some realistic aspects of the game, to satisfy those who chose the other option the changes will not be as widespread as previous expected. BIG thanks to those people who left comments. It'll be up to the future beta testing team to decide if the changes I do now are worthwhile, so the things I discuss in the future about this will not be final, it's all up to how well they work in-game.

Update On Decision

October 7, 2003

Well, I thought that posting about my indecision a few weeks ago would help me come to a definate solution, but it looks like people are as divided as my mind is on this matter. Currently the poll results are neck and neck, and have been since the beginning, and people have vented strong reasons for both sides. I'll leave the poll going until the end of the month so to get as much results as possible, and there are some very good ideas coming in for more ideal replacements to certain 'far out' units and structure already in the game.

As for what I'm thinking of doing in the end, I'm leaning more towards the realism aspect, although maybe not as intense as I originally planned. That way I won't completly alienate one group of people totally opposed to the method I decide to do. Right now I have not decided at all on what to replace certain aspects of the game with, as right now I'm centering my efforts on parts of the mod that aren't dependant on this vote, and I will begin the work on it when I decide what to do at the end of this month.
