I'm Still Awake!

- MooMan65

August 21, 2005

Blame Uni for the recent lack of updates here, I have five assignments due in two weeks, so go figure. Things are still progressing (if you haven't noticed, percentage completion went up yesterday to 28%), just slower than usual. I'm not ready to fully announce Beta 3's major feature, so for now can you settle for a smaller change instead?

As I'm never satisfied, I've once again played around with the Howitzer cameo making another version. Hey, at least it's news?

Lookie! New Poll!

- MooMan65

August 2, 2005

I can almost hear the cries of 'about damn time'! Hehe. I would have done this a while back but lately I'm having a very hard time with my computer not loading up any pages on the server that the poll is hosted on. I'm not sure why but I've been getting the usual 'Cannot Find Server' message for the past month just for the poll pages. Basically I couldn't do any changing or even viewing the poll, and right now it's still happening, except I had a brainstorm and tried our other comp on the network which works fine, baffling me even more as to the cause of this. But this is my problem, not yours.

At least it won't stop me from updating it now! I can finally ask the question on something I've wanted to get feedback on ever since I announced them: Gates. Specifically, Yuri's Gates:

Should Yuri get gates along with the Allies and Soviets?

Nice simple poll. Now, ignoring the fact that Yuri already has gates in the latest version of YR˛, I'm asking you as players if this is suitable, for a number of reasons:
  • It's not possible for Yuri's gates to be considered 'wall extensions', thus the walls do not automatically 'connect' to gates like the Allies and Soviets do as you can see in the screenshot in the earlier newspost. This is solely a graphical issue, as it does not affect gameplay or disadvantage Yuri in any way.

  • Extending the point above; because of the gates incompatibility, you cannot place gates down on top of already placed walls as a shortcut to building a base perimeter. With Allied and Soviet walls you could place down the certain directional gate directly on top of straight wall pieces just as you could clear ground and it would remove the wall pieces and place the gate down automatically just like in Tiberian Sun. As that game did not feature three sides however, Yuri's walls do not have this flexibility. This can possibly affect him negatively in the time it takes you to manually sell three wall pieces to make room for the gates, or place them down first and the walls afterwards. Would this affect you enough to warrant the removal of them entirely?
  • Finally, does he really need them? Obviously you can't wall up Slave Miners like you now can Ore Refinery's; but they could still be used to block the Barracks and War Factory better, making it harder for them to be captured or making enemy units become trained/built as veterans. Think carefully here: Yuri does have buildings that would benefit from the gates addition (as well as for general base perimeter construction), just not as many. As a player, would this combined with the issue above be enough to scrap the Yuri Gate option entirely?
I'll leave that to you now to decide. I'm flexible either way, so I'd rather see what the majority of the eventual players of the mod think of what should happen before I make any decision.

Moving on... Star Wars! What were the results in the end?

Star Wars? Venture into it should I? [148 votes total]

-Go for it! (102)
-Stick with C&C (108)
-Too early to tell (41)
-Either way works for me (12)

A very tight race between both sides of the argument! It was pretty much neck-and-neck for most of the life of the poll illustrating how divided this community is on the issue. They are two separate universes after all, so naturally opinions are going to be strong. This doesn't exactly make my decision any easier to make, but this would be good to come back to in February and the release of Empire At War. Thanks so much for those who voted and took the time also to post comments! They help me decide just as much as the actual numbers do.
