Major Feature 1 Part D: Lunar Retexturing

- MooMan65

February 7, 2005

Heh. It only took a single day of retexturing the change Lunar around a bit, and really to be honest it's not all that different from the original to warrent a screenshot marathon. The fact that it's barely used in skirmish means most people haven't nearly gotten used to its standard graphics as much as the other theaters anyway, so I'll leave this as something you'll have to play the mod to view eventually.

Lunar as a theater that wouldn't have even lasted long if it weren't for it playing a large role in the single player missions. Otherwise it would have suffered the same 'fate' as Urban, but that's another story.

But now the real challange begins! NewUrban! The largest theater in terms of tilesets available. I'm not sure how long this one will take, but don't expect it to be as quick as the previous releases. I've grown a bit weary of this process as it's become quite repetitive, so I'm not going as fast as before. I want to try and get it done before the end of this month though as that's when I head back to University. *shudder*

Major Feature 1 Part C: Desert Retexturing

- MooMan65

February 3, 2005

Three weeks for Snow, and only a single week for Desert! This is thanks primarily to Desert's rather limiting amount of tilesets available normally. Being as there wasn't that much to modify, it made things go quicker. That doesn't mean the quality isn't as good. On the contrary in fact, I think to date I'm most proud with the new look of this theater compared to the other two previously!

You know the drill by now! A further 10 screenshots are available. Unlike the past theaters almost everything has taken a retextured hit, since 'everything' didn't actually include a whole lot. One interesting thing to note however is that while the 'Farm Crops' tileset was available to use in Final Alert 2, and even included in some Desert maps in the game, they were in the original Temperate format! The result was that is looked a bit weird with Temperate grass along the outside of the Crops, and then it suddenly becomes sand for example afterwards. Well this has been solved! Desert now has their own Farm Crops version which you can see in one of the screenshots in the set here as usual.

Bring on the results from the Snow 'guess what map?' challange!

Mineral Cove - Frostbite (2-4)
Soviet Sprawl - May Day (2)
Frigid Gardens - May Day (2)
Precarious Point - Breakaway (2-3)
Criss Cross - Cold War (2-3)
Farming Anguish - Brink Of Disaster (2-4)
Ice Shelf - Face Down (2-4)
Montana Freezes Over - Montana DMZ (2-4) (well this one was pretty obvious...)
Frozen Woodland - Allied Co-Op Mission #3
Deserted Refinery - Allied Co-Op Mission #3

Lunar is next! This should take even less time to do than Desert! I'm going to have to find some third-party moon maps at this rate to get some screenshots done since there is only like a single official Lunar map in the game. Stay tuned! And figure out those Desert maps.

Yuri Prime's Replacement: New Poll!

- MooMan65

February 1, 2005

Being that it's the end of the month and all, and we have kinda reached a stalemate in deciding upon a name for Yuri's Replacement (if you missed the initial newspost on this topic, you can read up on it in this news archive page, and this forum thread), so it's time we settle the final choices in a nice friendly poll!

"Yuri Prime's Replacement: Pick the new name!"

You'll notice there's no 'Other' option with this poll. The final choice is between these three. I'm done getting new ideas (at least for now). Here's an explanation of them:

Khamsin: (thanks Statalyser!) This is the word for a Saharan windstorm that blows across Egypt annually. The concept here is that "he is known as 'The Desert Wanderer'" It emphasises his individualistic and lonar nature as a sniper-type infantry.
Reverant: Derived from the word 'reverent', or 'feeling profound respect for...'. The name used in context illustrating the leader's position of power and influence not only in his own group but in Yuri's eyes as well.
Revenant: Loosely based on it's meaning of 'returning after death' or the 'ghost' process. Being that this unit is a stealth-type infantry, the name can fit.

Take your pick! The final two aren't that different but they do mean different things, so falling short of deciding which name is cool, try and find the description that you like best and go for that instead.

Here's the results of the last poll:

How do you want YR˛ to be released? [122 votes total]

-I'll wait for the full thing to enjoy! (57)
-Release it now with new versions later! (39)
-Either way works for me. (26)

Thankfully it seems the majority of people people are willing to play the waiting game, which is reassuring as I wasn't 100% sure I was doing the right thing with spending this much time on the pre-release Beta's. Now that I've started releasing information on the Major Features you will see what type of things I'm actually doing, and what you'll all be able to experience in one go instead of progressively!

Some Fan Comments:

ra2yr fan: For the most part you should be able to see what the mod is like by reading the information pages here. Also as some people mentioned, say I released Beta 1 as the first public version of the mod. You'd have the joy of playing around with the new units and structures. However, as later versions were released with the bigger features you would already be beginning to grow weary of the things from past versions as they're no different thus making the new things less enjoyable as well. Imagine if Yuri's Revenge itself was released progressively. One time you'd be able to play as Yuri, then maybe you get the new Desert and Lunar theaters afterwards along with a bunch of maps, but you've already played Yuri to death. THEN the missions come along but everything else is already growing stale. This is why from the start I planned one big release, but I just wanted to get in opinions from the community as well on this matter, so I am glad you replied.
YuriTD88: Yes, bugs too... I forgot to mention that in the previous reply. You always need time to Beta Test anyway, but instead of waiting while the Beta Testers do their work hurrying them on so you can publically release it afterward, I'd rather work on the next beta while the testers are busy testing the earlier one.
avtj91: It's true that I did MooMan's Rules in a progressive fashion, but in all honest, that mod was almost solely made out of what I've done just in Beta 1 for YR˛! Just to a bigger extent. It's easy to do a progressive release when all you're doing is modifying the unit and structure part of the game, while in this mod it's only one part of it. That said I could release it now since I've mostly finished the unit and structure part, but I've already mentioned why I don't want to.
UberC: You know it's the Expansions that kept me from using a Mod Launcher back in the day for MooMan's Rules. And since then with that experience of releasing a mod with expansions, I'm not that keen to do the same thing again. This mod technically should be an expansion of the normal game itself, so it's not suitable to have its own ones as well!
IceByte: Suspence is gooood.

Well that's it for me now! Time to head back to Desert!
