DGN Forums Down

- Lion

February 26, 2003

We seem to be having some technical problems with the DEN Games Network Forums. I have people looking into the situation and we'll try and get em back as soon as we can.

I know all of the DEN websites were offline part of the day and this could have something to do with that...not sure but will keep all informed of the status.

UPDATE: Seems the Mysql data base is down on the server, and that's causing the problems with the DGN forums...so once it is functioning the forums will come back online.

Site Updates

- MooMan65

February 23, 2003

Been a few days since the last update, so I should detail the things added to the site during this time:

  • I have added a new RA2/YR download section Miscellaneous which basically will cover any modding graphics/downloads that don't fit into other sections. First download there is Blade's Single Player Mission Template in which will greatly assist you in creating your own RA2/YR SP Mission loading screens. Sleipnir64 and myself also assisted with the combining of the background world maps. The download basically contains a whole lot of images that is really all you need to design your own. The main feature though is Yuri related images, so you can design loading screens for any Yuri missions your mod may include!

  • I have continued to update the Generals Editors/Utilities page. Adding in any new programs I discover that will assist you in your modding efforts. Olaf has released V1.23 of the XCC Mixer program with added Generals support (more details here) and V1.24 is in the making to continue the coverage.

  • Finally I have added two new affiliates to the list, one is a new Featured Site Armageddon Entertainment, a development network which offers free hosting packages for modding based sites. Among the existing hosted sites is a 3DS2VXL converter, a new Voxel Editor program and the Reincarnated Editing Source, our second affilate. Editing Source was one of the most well-known graphics download sites when hosted by Federation Studios. This is the successor to that site and already has some nice content available for modders and collectors alike!

As for me, working on site content myself, tutorials and other C&C Resources are at the top of my list, I havn't had a free moment available to me lately.

Generals Editors

- MooMan65

February 20, 2003

I felt like I needed to get SOME C&C: Generals content up here, as the game since has been released around the world while MODDEN was offline. I've started the Editors/Utilities page for it, currently containing the few .BIG file editors available. Like the RA2/YR Editors, if the author has an official homepage I link to it instead of providing a direct download off the DGN Server, however utilities that don't have a homepage or are hard to find I will make available here. Don't worry, I've only just started this page to get something up, I will be updating it all the time when I see new content to suit it.

Sorry for not updating the site much, but school has kept me away from the site alot, which was what I anticipated since I made the changes to MODDEN earlier. I'll continue work in my free time and on weekends, that mainly includes getting the other Tutorials done and uploaded.

Back Online & First Tutorial!

- MooMan65

February 18, 2003

I apologise immensly for the long downtime MODDEN experienced over the past week, unfortunatly I have no control over the server the DENs are on and whatever happens, happens. I get as frustrated as the rest of you every time something like this happens.

However while it was offline I had more time on my hands to work on the Tutorials, and got the first one completly done. This is actually sort of an introduction to a tutorial right now, as newbie's need to know the details behind what things are before going through the steps of adding them in. On the left sidebar you'll see Tutorials has been added under Red Alert 2 Resources. More tutorials will be added there over time, it's taken a relativly long time as I want to make them as comprehensive as possible. Of course experienced modders will know all about this information and how to use it, but I do this for the benefit of newbie's.

If experienced modders have anything to point out in the tutorials I add up, rather an error, mistake or addition, please don't hesitate to let me know. Also like downloads I will be accepting submissions of tutorials other people have writted, either on forums on for their own purposes. If you wish to have your tutorial displayed here, please e-mail it to me and if it passes my inspection I'll format it and add in here with full credit to you. The Tutorials section I hope will become somewhat a library of information on modding whether they be typed up by myself or community members.

Oh, and this goes for Generals as well, I welcome Generals tutorials in the same way as RA2 ones.

Generals-RA2 Cameos!

- MooMan65

February 11, 2003

A new cameo pack! It contains all the C&C: Generals cameos of the three sides units and structures convered into RA2/YR format! There is no text on them so you can use them however you like, what's done is the palette conversion, and most of all the bevel/corner effects that is quite hard to duplicate on cameos. These could come in handy for a number of things...

Site Updates?

- MooMan65

February 10, 2003

Well a day has past giving most people enough time to get used to the new formatting, now I should give you an idea as to what the hell I'm working that warrents sacrificing newsposts for!

Unfotunatly none of them are Generals related as for reasons I've mentioned many times before. I'll continue for a long while yet with RA2/YR simply because I'm not bored at all with modding it, and there are people like me either with slow computers or a passion for the ol' 2D strategy games! The RA2/YR Editing Community is still a long way off from dying, and I will be continuing my work for as long as I can (until I get a better computer, which could be some time though).

  • Tutorials: Anyway, tutorials. I have not forgotten them from the results of last month's poll, with the graphics submission system still in operation I still need to get these up so newbie's to modding can figure out what to do with them and graphics downloads from all over the community. I will get started on these quite soon.

  • Projects: This is the main thing, the majority of voters chose to see more projects on MODDEN, which is a good sign to know that my continued work into RA2/YR Projects is not in vain. As I have hinted and speculated to people in the past, I am working on a NEW RA2/YR modification, this one isn't totally off the planning stages yet so I don't want to get into it in detail just yet. However I can say it will be a gameplay modification like my past MooRules mod, however it will focus more on IMPROVING the current game and options rather than adding in new things outright. More details later...

  • Content Updates: With the added time available, I have been thinking about doing a small update to MooRules to fix the number of bugs and issues brought in by V3.0, this would be more of an individual patch rather than a brand new version, I will be looking into the matter further. The Terrain Expansion is due to be updated to V1.4 in the future, featuring many new additions primarily to the Snow theater to make it possible for 'SnowUrban' maps of sorts. Blade is working on getting The Project website back up, and there will probably be more details on this there. Certain graphics downloads that I created might also receive updates, as I improve my cameos with a more Westwood-like Bevel effect and other related things. As soon as I do this there will be news updates telling you which downloads have received upgrades.

  • Generals Content: Now, this is where some problems arise. Since I'm not in the position right now to be able to review submissions for Generals, it could be difficult for me to be able to manage graphics and other modding things for a game I WILL have, but not be able to do much too. If worse comes to worse, I will attempt to find someone who could review them for me and then, if it passes their standard, I can then proceed to upload it. However it's a bit too early for that right now, so I'll play it by ear over the next few weeks.

These are the main four categories right now, there probably will be other things that pop up, but tutorials, new projects and content updates are on my list of priorities right now. TQ is due to release the new Ex Liberta site quite soon, and MODDEN does have Generals projects covered even if they aren't done by me! That's about it for now, expect content updates and tutorials beginning to surface rather soon.

Welcome Back!

- MooMan65

February 9, 2003

MODDEN is now back up and running again after a couple days of restucturing! The temporary index page outlined the reasons and the changes that would be happening, although in reality the changes are not as drastic as origionally conceived. Yes, newsposting coverage is going to change as that's the main issue here, although if it were just that I wouldn't have shut down the site. I'll go over every aspect of the site now that it's fully back up and running:

Newsposting
News coverage needed to be changed to free up time for school and other work offline, I found that I spent too much time searching for news, and not enough on my real life and working on other parts of the site such as content and projects. News will now be, as described earlier, centered around MODDEN/DGN itself, with the only global community news being EA Announcement relays and affiliate news. News frequency will be drastically reduced, just look at the other project-based sites like C-GEN, Allies Revenge 2 and Blitzkrieg among many others, their news is not frequent but all relevent and unique to the projects and information covered by the site. That's what it will be like now here on MODDEN. Other Project organisers TQ and Rolk also have news accounts to post about their various projects when they wish. Since I will not have to concentrate on the newsposting side of MODDEN so much, I can spend more time getting better content and working on new modding projects. ;)

Projects
This is the biggest change and the reason why I shut down the site during the restructuring, if news was all I was changing it wouldn't be taken a few days to do the changes. I want MODDEN now to become more of a 'host' to the project sites, rather than having them built in, they can have their own layouts, content and style. Sort of like mini-sites. All news will be centered on the main MODDEN page, but the project sites are the home for all the information and downloads for the project itself. I took MODDEN offline so I could do these kind of modifications to the existing projects. As you will be able to see through clicking on the Project name in the left hand sidebar, each project of mine uses a different primary colour to the main MODDEN page. I didn't create brand new layouts for them as they already are part of the site, however future projects that I add will sport more than simply colour changes. Also TQ is busy with his own design of a recreated Ex Liberta project page which will be up and running soon, with the release of Generals imminant it is time for modders to actually begin their work.

Submissions/Downloads
Don't panic, the changes done to this are definatly not as drastic as I mentioned on my earlier index page, there STILL will be asset and information downloads and I still will accept submissions, however the policy is now a lot stricter than before. If you check the download pages I have removed a number of downloads including some of my own that were origionally on before. The downloads that have been taken off are still available on request however if the owner(s) of them or others have a specific few that they desire to have. E-mail me with the details and I can sort that out. So, contrary to earlier reports, the entire submission system has not changed, just that the quality policy will be stricter to make sure that the downloads available are unique, origional and sport impressive design/planning skills.

I think I have covered just about everything necessary right now. Later on I'll go into detail about what I have planned for the site content-wise in the future. Until then, I welcome you all back!

Site Modifications

- MooMan65

February 3, 2003

If you haven't noticed already, I have slighty modified the 'Downloads' sub-section on the left hand sidebar. Now it's titled 'Resources' as underneath is contains more than just file downloads, this is in preperation for me to begin my work on basic modding tutorials, as this modification allows me to stick the Tutorials category underneath it accuratly. All download pages are still here, you just have to go through the global RA2/YR Downloads index page (which is here) and then choose your appropriate download type.

I am also thinking of modifying the Mod Database to be more informative. It's on my list of things to do anyway, with school back in my life properly I do not nearly have as much free time as I used to. I may have to adjust my online life to make sure it doesn't interfear with my studies if they start conflicting, but so far I'm coping.

CNC Sector Previews RenAlert!

- MooMan65

February 3, 2003

CNC Sector has a very in-depth preview posted up by Chipstixz on the upcoming Renegade Alert modification! It includes screenshots and is almost 2,000 words long! Here is a small snippet of the preview, and you can view the entire thing here!

First off, I was extremely excited as soon as I started up a 1-person server on LAN so I could run around and test out the mod. It was a very pleasurable experience when the loading screen disappeared, and was replaced with the friendly glow of the new Red Alert Purchase Terminal. To begin my testing experience, I pressed the often used "F" button and went into third-person view, displaying the new Allied Soldier! "Cool!" I thought out loud, and began to run around being a tourist in the Red Alert world. As I ran out of the beautiful new War Factory, my eyes were greeted with a friendly green environment. I looked to my right, and saw accurately modeled Renegade equivalents of many of the old Red Alert structures. "Woohoo! Let's go climb into one of these bunkbeds here," I was nosing around in the Infantry Barracks. About 12 or so bunkbeds were around in the green Allied tent, which would probably be a pretty good obstacle for any Soviet infantry running through the barracks with any lag. I continued to check out the beautiful Renegade recreations of the Red Alert structures...

Secret's Out!

- MooMan65

February 2, 2003

DeeZire has interviewed the third lucky person who has been able to work with EA Pacific since early last year on Generals: EJAH! If you don't know him, he has created some of the most detailed maps in the community, which are all specially available on RADEN if you want to take a look.

DeeZire and EJAH have worked closely with the World Builder sharing thoughts and ideas over the months, and now DeeZire has released a short interview on that subject! Here is a snippet:

Hi EJAH, can you start off by giving us a bit of background information about yourself - I mean, we all know you made some awesome maps for Red Alert 2, what other kind of things have you done?
I'm Edwin Johan Alexander Huisman (EJAH), 31 years of age and living in the Netherlands. I started making maps many years ago for Command & Conquer, mostly just for playing against friends of mine. I started with the original Command & Conquer.

After the cool Red Alert 2 stuff that featured in magazines, things seem to have been quiet from you - what have you been up to this last year or so?
This last year has been quite a challenge. I have been working for EA Pacific designing maps for Generals. Never thought that I would get an opportunity like this so its a bit like a dream coming true!

I know that hehe, but for the readers out there - how did that come about then? Whats it been like?
I got a mail from EA Pacific about a design opportunity for Generals. Its been great working on a major project like this... of course it was very different than I imagined. When I made maps for RA2 etc there was nobody to tell me what I could or shouldnt do. This time, there were some guidelines to follow but they gave me enough room to use my imagination, not exactly carte blanche - I found that difficult sometimes, but hey... thats one of the things I've learned.
Pretty interesting! You can catch the rest of the questions here.

BigPOP V0.4 Beta!

- MooMan65

February 1, 2003

BigPOP, now a C&C: Generals Data Editor instead of it's past title as a Big Archive Extractor, has been updated to V0.4 Beta and is available at CNCNZ. Here is a list of the changes and fixes to this version:

-Mainly a 'shoring up' release, to make code more reliable and easy-to-use.
-Added text parser companion. This is used to read .TXT, .INI, .WND, .HTM and .HTML files. TXT, WND and INI files are edited using the in-built text editor, while HTML files are parsed for viewing in Internet Explorer.
-Minor change to CSF window: 'Save' button now ghosts and changes caption until saving is completed, at which point it becomes enabled and once again says 'Save'.
-Changed email address for support (dce@igreen.net), and changed About box to include this information.
-Minor changes to BIG file load and extract routines; load code now uses NumberOfEntries instead of 'Terminate when empty' loop.
-Completely rewritten BIG file save routine to fix some rare bugs, and to make my life a little easier. Slower (but not much), though 100 percent reliable.
Head to CNCNZ for the full V0.4b download or an update from 0.3b!

New MODDEN Poll!

- MooMan65

February 1, 2003

With January over and behind us now, once again I have posted a new poll on the right sidebar for you to vote. Thanks for everyone who voted and BIG thanks to the three people who left comments! I know the poll was rather self explanitory and so comments weren't really required here, but the option is always available. The new poll question this month is:

"Do you intend to mod C&C: Generals?"

With official modding support there should actually be a large number wanting to mod the game compared with past ones. With such a short time before release of the game, but the end of this poll mods would have already begun to pop up all over the place. Here is the last poll's results:

"What upcoming content would you like to see first on MODDEN?"
[180 Votes Total]

-Past C&C Games Content (20)
-Basic RA2/YR Modding Tutorials (49)
-More RA2/YR Modding Projects (84)
-Modding Information Content (27)

Some User Comments:

-Chris (cobal): I think there must come more projects especialy for generals because that game has and is the futere ra2 and yuri are good but not good graphics i mean too cartoony and gnerals is better.
-ArgCmdr: Community Needs tutorials but i have noticed how most people find it easier to ask than to read. O have noticed i kinda wasted my time these last days writing tutorials, and thats why i wont bother anymore on the subject, unless its desesperately necessary. As the news on my site say, im using the time i should use for my own projects to try help others, but if this others dont worry at all, then i do nothing wasting my time.
-Dave: I say more ra2/yr tutorials, there seems to be desperate need for it from the community in the forums! Also others can submit projects if we do this!

It looks like people still like playing those RA2/YR mods! Of course modding projects take a lot of time to plan and make, but I included that option to make sure that the modding projects I plan now won't be in vain come release! But the most popular easy content option seems to be Basic Tutorials which is not really surprising. I get about 20 e-mails a week from people asking 'how do I put this into the game?' and the like. It looks like I'll have to brush up on my English skills to start working on some tutorials, with planning of future RA2/YR mods in the background! You don't have to worry about Generals projects, that poll was what I would be working on, MODDEN already has two other project leaders working on Generals mods that will go ahead regardless!

ArgCmdr raised a good point in his comment though, that people do find it easier to ask rather than to look and learn. This is why I don't intend on doing any in-depth tutorials and waste my time, I will simply do basic ones relating to the content on MODDEN such as encorporating them into RA2/YR. Thanks ArgCmdr for bringing that up!

Thanks goes out to all voters! You can see all past poll results as well as all fan comments on our Past Polls page. Be sure to leave your vote in the new poll!
